The map update process takes around 45 minutes to an hour with a Pentium 4 2.4ghz 2GB Ram PC. My wife and I both own Garmin Units with text to speech and we are fully satisfied with them. My first attempt to install this map update resulted in an error displayed on my GPS unit screen that occurred about 30 minutes (72% completed) into the update process ending it with instructions to make sure that the GPS unit had the latest operating software installed. I had opted for the 2008 update since it cost was significantly less than the 2009 update and there may not be a lot of difference and the 2008 and 2009 maps. One of the units was purchased 5 years ago and has worked flawlessly since we bought it but it had the 2004 map edition and that is the one we updated. I went to the Garmin Updates and Downloads website at [.].while my Garmin was still connected to the PC through the USB cable and I downloaded the current software update directly to my GPS unit. I then attempted a reinstall of the map update and it worked fine.
Do not buy before year end as price generally drops in January Welcome update as we live in a new sub division. worth paying for and discount helped.
I tried to type the address of the school but the street didn't exist. I wouldn't give them the satisfaction of my money again for these junk maps. It should be a crime to sell these map "updates" for $80. Also, I typed in the name of a gym and it directed me to a grocery store which was half of a mile away (kind of the opposite of my intentions eh, Garmin). Might as well purchase a new GPS for $100 and get a free update of maps. They are at least a year outdated from the release date and can't find some places that have been around since the mid 1990s. Recently I tried to type in a HIGH SCHOOL and it had no idea that the school even existed.
With this kind of customer service I'm going to wait for something better to come along. I will not be replacing my GPS with a new Garmin as I had hoped. So the thieves have both my GPS and Garmin is letting them keep my $60 map updates.
I own two units, a Street Pilot 2820 fixed in my car, and a Nuvi 680 which I take with me on my frequent business trips. I was only allowed to update one unit with the CD, even though both units are registered with My Garmin. Garmin is still the leader in car GPS devices in the US.
I became really angry when my Street Pilot was stolen, and even though I reported the unit and serial number stolen to Garmin to prevent the thieves trying to update it, Garmin still would not let me install the Maps on my Nuvi. Garmin still make the best hardware, but the software is becoming a real let down. I bought the 2008 updates but could see no difference.
None of the new roads in my area had been added and the mistakes I've noticed (mislabeled roads, illegal turns) have not been fixed.
Waste of money. This software was supposed to update my old software. Not very updated at all.
